Research and Teaching Interests

I am a specialist in late eighteenth-century German literature. My doctoral dissertation on Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder was published by the Pennsylvania State University Press. I am currently investigating Wackenroder's co-author of the Fantasies on Art for Friends of Art, Ludwig Tieck.

When I teach elementary and intermediate German classes, I try to provide many opportunities for the students to be creative. Some of the most successful independent projects that were carried out in my classes at Western Maryland College last year were illustrated children's stories in German, posters that portrayed the students' homes and families, and student-designed lessons that involved the use of German Internet sites. German 2212 also videotaped a humorous adaptation of Friedrich Duerrenmatt's play, The Physicists (Die Physiker).

I have just completed my first term as secretary of the Maryland Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). This summer I was reelected to a second term in this position. I have assisted Dr. Mohamed Esa in planning German-American Day since this special day for high school students of German was first begun in October, 1995.

Hobbies

My hobbies include travel, golf, reading biographies of famous people, and collecting rare books printed prior to 1900 in English, French, German, or Latin.
