German Prepositions

In a chapter on German prepositions, Sparks/ Van Horn write:

"German prepositions are just as rich and varied as their English counterparts.

A. The prepositional phrase

The meaning and function of a preposition can be best understood in the preposition's most common setting, the prepositional phrase. Here is a simple example in English:

on the table

1. On is a preposition.
2. The table is the object of the preposition.
3. The whole prepositional phrase answers the question "where", i.e., it functions as an adverb of place.

Other prepositional phrases specify the "when" (time) and "how" (manner) of an action or situation.

B. German prepositional phrases

Look at these prepositional phrases:

auf dem Tisch on the table
mit ihm with him
für mich for me
um die Ecke around the corner
während der Ferien during the vacation These German examples show that the object of a preposition can be in various cases --any case, in fact, except the nominative: mit ihm (dative)
für mich (accusative)
während der Ferien (genetive)" (pages 94-95) "C. Contractions

Contraction often occur within prepositional phrases. In fact, certain contraction are so common that they are in effect mandatory:

Some other contractions are common in colloquial German, but they are not mandatory:

accusative: motion toward a destination [wohin? - where to?]

anläßlich on the occasion of              Anläßlich des 100. Todestages des Dichters wurden seine Werke neu herausgegeben.

wegen because of, due to                  Wegen eines Herzfehlers (heart defect) durfte er Tennis nicht spielen.
zeit in my/ his/ her lifetime                Zeit meines Lebens liebte ich schöne Geschichten (stories).
zufolge according to                         Zufolge der heftigen (strong) Regenfälle ging sie nicht zur Arbeit.
zugunsten in favour of                      Die Geschworenen entschieden sich zugunsten des Angeklagten.
zwecks for the purpose of                 Zwecks besserer Koordination sollen FBI und CIA zusammengelegt werden.
