  • 1101, 1102 Elementary Latin:

    An introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of the Latin language with emphasis on the development of reading skills. The course includes an overview of Roman history, literature, and culture, as well as beginning readings in ancient texts. This class satisfies a basic liberal arts requirement for Foreign Language.
    2255 Topics in Classical Literature:
    A study of outstanding literary works of the classical world. Emphasis is on studying ancient authors and genres in their original context and analyzing them in the light of modern literature and criticism. Although readings will be in English, language students who have completed Latin 1102 may choose to study some texts in the original language and continue the study of grammar and composition at the intermediate level. Topics include poetry, comic and tragic drama, narrative, and the ancient novel. Prerequisite: Latin 1102. This class satisfies a basic liberal arts requirement for Foreign Language and Humanities. This class is cross-listed with Comparative Literature 2255.
    2265; 2266; 3365; 3366; 4465; 4466 Special Topics in Latin:
    The study of a selected topic in the discipline. Different topics are chosen for each offering, based on students' interests and needs.
    2298; 2299; 3398; 3399; 4498; 4499 Independent Studies in Latin:
    Directed study planned and conducted with reference to the needs of those students who are candidates for departmental honors. Qualified students who are no candidates for such honors but who desire to do independent studies are also admitted with permission of the Department.
    Note: All of the above courses are four (4) credits toward graduation with the exception of internships and independent studies which can be zero (0) to four (4) credits.
