INTASC Principle #6 |
Principle #6: The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
Artifact #1: Research Planner (short powerpoint)
Description: The research planner has been developed to distribute to 8th grade classes during the I-Search Research Unit. This planner specifies each step of the Big6 process in a non-threatening manner. The planner also include lists of resources available in the media center both in print and non-print. This planner is a handbook for the students to use when at home as well. Passwords and database information are provided.
Connection to the standard: The Research Planner shows that I can provide the use of effective non-verbal and media communication techniques to support active inquiry and supportive interaction in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
Reflection
Students
The students are provided with a tool that they may use not only for the 8th grade research project but for future research projects in high school. The students need to have hands on guidance while they conduct research. This tool provides an organizational system which models the research process. By using the handbook, students can be more independent and gain life skills for self-sufficiency. In addition, the students have access to informational tools that they would otherwise not know.
Teaching
While teaching the 8th grade research unit, I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed students using the handbook during class without being prompted by me. I feel that I am giving the students skills for not only the research process, but skills for future life long learning. Teaching the students to answer their own questions through the use of resources and prior knowledge is satisfying. I know that the process will take time, but these students will gain independence and knowledge.
Next Step
I would like to begin using this planner in an adapted form for research units at lower levels. It is never to early to teach the students to keep informational packets that will serve as resources in the future. I would like to use a plus/delta chart or Likert scale to evaluate the usefullness of the planner after a unit and after the students progress to high school.
